BrightJoys started as one stubborn idea: a night out should feel like a night off. Nine years later we're a hotel, a gaming floor, a private events room and a restaurant — all behind one door on Andersons Bay Road.

No investors' deck, no franchise playbook. Just a building on Andersons Bay Road and a list of things we refused to compromise on.

Twelve rooms, one bar, and a poker table that ran three nights a week. The sign went up in April; the first full-house sign went up in May.
The gaming floor doubles — twelve tables, ninety machines, and the house rules painted on the wall where everyone can read them.
The conference wing
We build the 120-seat hall upstairs. Dunedin finally gets a daylight venue that doesn't smell like last night.
The full renovation
Every room redone, the Glasshouse built, the whisky wall at Andersons Bar hits 180 bottles. The place finally looks like it feels.
Forty-two rooms, one very busy kitchen, and the same rule as day one: a night out should feel like a night off.
Four rules on the wall by the bar
They're painted above the pass, where the staff see them every shift. Guests tend to pick them up by osmosis.
01 · Face-to-face, always
Every table is dealt by a person. No screens pretending, no apps skimming. If you want to play, you come to the venue — that's the deal.
02 · The guest sets the pace
Big night or quiet corner — both are correct answers. Nobody gets rushed off a table or talked into a third round.
03 · Play by the book
18+, ID always, and staff trained to spot when a good night is tipping over. House rules are on the wall and they apply to everyone.
04 · Feed people properly
A kitchen that closes early is a hotel that doesn't care. Ours runs till 11, and the menu changes when the market does.
